Parks and Rec- Ted Stephens stated:
The Gunter Parks & Recreation Committee met on Sunday Feb. 27, 2006 to discuss and make recommendations to apply for grant funds from the Gunter Economic Development Committee. Those present were: Chairman – Jeff Hammock, Vice Chairman – Kent Hewlett, Ted Stephens – Liaison Rep, Dan Moody – Rep & Jeff Fullencheck – Rep.
Ted Stephens presented the committee with a progress report and updated costs. Brandon Gillespie was present representing GYA.
As of Feb. 27, 80% of the dirt work is complete. All that remains is cutting the north end parking areas, north drainage east to west and the southeast drainage swell off field one. Also, back filling the infields with the final select fill and sand. This is scheduled to be completed this week weather permitting. The committee discussed field drainage and dugout drainage at length and all were satisfied with the way it was planned and completed. Fields three & four drainage and planning were discussed briefly as the two phases relate to each other.
One truckload of Tiff 319 sod (22 pallets) remains to be installed but will be arriving by the end of this week or early next. Remaining sod is minimal as all the infields and most of the outfields have been installed. By weeks end a total of 110 pallets of sod will have been installed.
All of the outfield fence posts have been installed and are awaiting chain link. We are still investigating price comparisons on fencing at this time. Backstop & foul line poles should arrive Monday or Tuesday of this week and be installed by the end of the week.
Dugout concrete is scheduled to start mid to end of the week and hopefully will be completed by mid next week. We will then start framing the dugouts. We are working with brick companies to hopefully donate or get brick to us at a reduced rate for the dugouts. It is our plan to put a metal r-panel roof with metal facia trim on the dugouts. So far I only have one material bid from Mueller Supply in Sherman but we will get more bids this week.
Electrical conduit is already installed and we are hoping to have lights on in the next two to three weeks. GISD donated the foul poles from the old fields and shared the costs in having them moved & installed at the new location. We are trying to salvage the actual lights from the many poles removed from the old fields and they are staged currently on the future field three.
The sprinkler system is installed with a few sprinkler heads remaining to date but installation is expected this week. As soon as the electrical work is done the sprinkler timing devices can be completed. Also this week back flow prevention devices will be in place. The city has agreed to update the water meter from a ¾” to a 2” to accommodate the sprinkler system and they have committed to installing the meter by weeks end weather permitting.
The outfield signing is being made and should be ready to weld the sign frames to the foul poles by weeks end. We will be painting the foul poles yellow ourselves in an effort to save cost.
GISD donated the old bleachers from the softball fields which include two large metal sets and one wooden set. In moving the bleachers the access stairs were destroyed on both metal bleachers. Rather than build new stairs and in an effort to make them safer and less tall, we will be cutting the base frame down on the two metal sets. This means that a spectator would simply walk up onto the first step rather than climb a set of stairs to get to the first row of seats. The metal bleachers will be placed one at each of the two angled backstops to maximize the spectator’s view. The wooden set needs no modification and GYA will decide at which field and at what location it will be used.
The Parks Committee discussed the amount to request from the Gunter EDC and decided to request the full amount of $72,312.00 for both fields. So far $31,394.00 has been paid out.
Based on our current budget GYA volunteers, GISD and individual donations add up to more $22,000.00 in labor & material savings and that is a minimal figure not counting what new light poles would have cost. We expect the savings total to increase as the fields near completion. We can’t access a value to many helpful things like; time spent to water the fields and the fire department loaning us old out of service fire hose to water the sod until the sprinkler system is complete.
